Press National Museum
Built in 1997 and located next to Ponte de Freixo [Freixo Bridge], the Press National Museum has manual printing machines that still work and that visitors can try out. The museum pieces are distributed throughout three exhibition areas, dedicated to pre-printing, printing and final touches. The Rodrigo Alvares Room is a tribute to the first Portuguese printer who, in 1497, printed two books in Porto. In the Temporary Exhibition Gallery there are always new exhibitions related to the press and graphic arts. There is also a gallery dedicated to cartoon and each year the PortoCartoon World Festival is organised, this being a major event regarded by FECO - Federation of Cartoonist Organizations - as being one of the three largest cartoon festivals in the world.
