Medical Care
If you need medical assistance and it is a mild or moderate case, visit the closest Local Health Centre to your location.
If the case is severe, visit the Hospital ER service that is closer to you - check out the list of hospitals in Porto in the Useful contacts section. If you are unable to get to a hospital on your own and in the event of an accident or sudden illness, please call 112. The call to the national medical emergency telephone number is free and is accessible from anywhere in the country at any time of the day.
Furthermore, please note that in the event of accident or illness during your visit to Portugal, citizens of 27 countries of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, have access to free health care or at moderate costs - as do all Portuguese citizens. If this applies to you, simply show your European Health Insurance Card, which is a document that must be issued in your country of origin, along with your passport and/or identification document.
